Interview by: Christa Johnston
CHRISTA: What sparked your interest in sculpting?
JOHNNY BLADES: Its not really an interest for sculpting its more of an interest with art in general. I do all different types of art.
CHRISTA: How long does it take you to make each piece?
JOHNNY BLADES: It can take me 30 min to 3 hours depending on the detail. I have made well over 1k pieces so my speed is incredible, I have knocked out 17 pieces in one day before.
CHRISTA: How much attention goes into detail and design?
JOHNNY BLADES: 100% attention goes in to each one. I wont sell or make anything that I don’t feel is up to par. I would rather start over then send out unsatisfactory work.
CHRISTA: You do custom memorial pieces as well. How does it make you feel knowing you have made something for someone to remember a loved one by?
JOHNNY BLADES: Its nice to know that someone trusts me with the ashes of fallen family and friends. I will admit i’m not a fan of making the death stone pieces. Not knowing who the person is, having the ashes work into your skin as u make it ..it definitely makes the clay feel different, but I understand the importance to it.
CHRISTA: You also have sculpted gear shift knobs and several other custom pieces that aren’t necklaces. Do you have any intention to further do work like that?
JOHNNY BLADES: Yes, I’m just getting started with my work and expanding. I have so many non jewelry related projects I want to do and will continue to do. Expansion is key.
CHRISTA: Have you made pieces for yourself or loved ones as gifts?
JOHNNY BLADES: I don’t really make too much stuff for myself unless its something I want and cant find, but yes I make stuff for friends and loved ones all the time. In fact I’m sure that is one reason people want to hang out with me. I noticed a big change in people after my work became famous. I know people don’t like me for me.
CHRISTA: Did you ever imagine when you were a teenager that this is what would happen for you down the road?
JOHNNY BLADES: I knew that my passion for art wouldn’t let me do anything else, so I knew I was going to do something with it. I never thought it would grow to this caliber this fast.
CHRISTA: When you see celebrities wearing your work, how does that make you feel?
JOHNNY BLADES: It’s an honor to have living legends respect and wear my work. It shows that I’m serious and I’m on par to the worlds best and that I am the best in the world ..no one has done what I have done or taken it this far.
CHRISTA: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
JOHNNY BLADES: In 5 years from now I see my self, my legacy, cemented as the best hand crafted jewelry designer in the world!
CHRISTA: Has anyone ever tried to detour you from what you do?
JOHNNY BLADES: Everyone I have cared for, the only real ones that should of supported me has tried to detour me. FRIENDS, FAMILY, EX’S..tried to stop me ..hold me down ..tell me to get a “real job” … telling me that my work would never go anywhere……….. IN YOUR FACE JERKS!
CHRISTA: Do you have anyone you would like to thank that has helped and supported you along the way?
JOHNNY BLADES: I wouldn’t like to thank anyone except my clients. No one has done anything or helped me in my life, they just held me down and back. I never wanted to be like any other artist or look up to anyone. The only person I ever wanted to be was me!
Art has been my passion for as far back as I can remember. It was never just a hobby; it was always something I knew I wanted to do. I never had to ask myself, “What do I want to be when I grow up?” When I was 17, I realized that my art had gone from just being above average – to something much bigger. I honestly felt like I had gotten extremely good over night. Comic books were always my biggest inspiration. I still go to the comic stores to this day to buy comics or even just to smell the store – they have a unique scent. My favorite dark art works come from H.R. Giger and Alvin Schwarz. Their styles are super original and super dark and everything that I care for and love. I have no limitations on what kind of art I can create. Right now, I am concentrating on my custom necklace collections. Eventually, I would like to sell prints of my artwork stretched on canvas. My biggest accomplishments include being in several magazines, designing custom artwork and pieces for celebrities, and having my art at the 2011 Metal Awards. I have beaten out all of the other artists when my art has been displayed in galleries. I am one of the top 20 artists in Las Vegas.
